Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu FAQs

Have other questions or want to enroll your child in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu? You’re welcome to call, message, or visit us in person—we’re here to help.

  • What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art focused on self-defense through technique, control, and leverage—rather than size or strength. Originally developed by the Gracie family, BJJ teaches students how to defend themselves using grappling and ground-based movements instead of punches or kicks.

At our academy, kids learn how to stay calm under pressure, gain control over an opponent, and apply practical self-defense skills in a safe, age-appropriate way. It’s an empowering practice that helps children develop confidence, coordination, discipline, and body awareness—all while having fun and getting stronger on the mat.

  • What are the benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for kids?

BJJ offers more than just physical training—it helps kids grow in every aspect of their development:

Real Self-Defense Skills: Children learn how to safely protect themselves using age-appropriate techniques that emphasize control, not aggression.

Physical Fitness & Coordination: Classes improve strength, balance, agility, and overall body awareness—building a foundation for lifelong health and athletic ability.

Focus & Discipline: Through structured lessons and consistent practice, kids develop strong listening skills, patience, and the ability to follow instructions.

Confidence & Resilience: As students overcome challenges on the mat, they build real confidence and learn how to handle setbacks with a positive mindset.

Supportive Community: Our academy provides a safe, encouraging space where kids feel supported by coaches and peers while making lasting friendships.

  • Who can train BJJ?

At Charles Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy Kids in Granite Bay, our programs are designed exclusively for children ages 4–15. We welcome kids of all fitness levels, personalities, and experience—whether they’re stepping onto the mat for the very first time or already have some martial arts background.

Each age group has its own class structure, ensuring that every child trains in a safe, supportive environment that matches their stage of development. No prior experience is required—just a willingness to learn and have fun!

  • What should we expect in the first class?

You can expect a welcoming, beginner-friendly experience designed to make your child feel comfortable and confident from the start.

Our instructors are experienced in working with young students and know exactly how to ease first-class nerves. Your child will be introduced to basic movements, learn how to move safely on the mat, and participate in fun, structured drills tailored to their age group.

  • What should my child wear to class?

We’ll provide a uniform for the intro class—just bring a water bottle and flip-flops! Parents are welcome to stay and watch as their child learns the ropes in a safe, supportive environment.

  • Does my child need to be in shape to start Jiu-Jitsu?

Not at all! Kids of all activity levels can start training—no prior athletic experience is needed.

Our classes are designed to help children build strength, coordination, and endurance over time. Whether your child is already active or just getting started with physical activity, Jiu-Jitsu is a great way to improve fitness in a fun, encouraging environment.

Our instructors work with each child at their own pace, making sure they feel supported, challenged, and successful from day one.

  • Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe for kids?

Yes—when taught properly, BJJ is one of the safest martial arts for children to learn. At our academy, your child’s safety is our top priority.

All classes are led by certified, background-checked instructors who specialize in teaching kids. We use age-appropriate techniques, clear boundaries, and constant supervision to ensure a safe, positive training environment.

Students are taught to practice with control, respect, and proper form—so they build real skills while learning how to protect themselves and others responsibly.

  • How often should my child attend classes?

For most students, training 2 to 3 times per week is the perfect balance to build skills, stay consistent, and continue progressing.

That said, every child is different. Some may start with one class per week to get comfortable, while others may want to train more often as their confidence grows. Our flexible schedule allows families to find a routine that fits their lifestyle—while still giving kids the structure and repetition they need to improve.
